October is recognized in Ontario and across Canada as Latin American Heritage Month. The month is dedicated to celebrating the rich histories, cultures, languages, and contributions of Latin American communities. 

Today, more than 400,000 first-, second-, and third-generation Canadians of Hispanic and Latin origin call Ontario home. With roots tracing back to 23 countries, this dynamic population forms one of Ontario’s fastest-growing communities, contributing significantly to its social, economic, political, and multicultural fabric.

Latin Heritage Month was first formally recognized by the City of Toronto in 2014 and designated nationally by the Government of Canada in 2018. Taking place in October, the month coincides with many cultural observances and dates of significance celebrated both locally and globally, including Día de la Hispanidad, Día de las Culturas, Día de la Raza, Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural, and Día de la Resistencia Indígena. 

Addressing Marginalization and Representing Diversity

Latin American communities are vast and diverse, encompassing distinct countries, cultures, Indigenous Peoples, Afro-Latin communities, and languages. These communities also continue to face systemic barriers, racism, xenophobia, anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Black racism, and linguistic and cultural marginalization. 

By engaging in meaningful learning that honours the diversity, resilience, and lived experiences of Latin American peoples, we can collectively work to dismantle these barriers and create safer, more equitable environments.
