This spring KCI students in grade 10 (and some grade 11 & 12) students will have the opportunity to complete their literacy requirement by taking the OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test). As a reminder, successful completion of the literacy test or equivalent is a graduation requirement.

The 2023 Spring OSSLT will occur on Tuesday, April 4 (Part 1) and Wednesday, April 5 (Part 2) during the block A class (8:20-9:50am).

All students are expected to attend their regularly scheduled classes.    The schedule on April 4 & 5 will be:

A 8:20 – 9:50 Extended block to allow for the delivery of the OSSLT on April 4 & 5
B 9:55 – 10:55
Lunch 10:55 – 11:55
C 11:55 – 1:10
D 1:15 – 2:30

Monday, March 27 to Friday, March 31 – Practice Test (during a block A class)

Tuesday, April 4 – OSSLT Part 1

How will the test be administered?

The test is online. Students will use their board provided Chromebooks to write the OSSLT. The test has many features to support students including:

  • A help menu

  • A text-speech function that reads the text on the screen out loud

  • Zoom in and zoom out

  • A line reader that helps students focus on one line of text at a time

  • A high-contrast view

  • Annotation tools

  • A tool for rough notes

The 2023 Spring OSSLT will be completed online for those eligible to write it –
  • The test will be delivered in 2 parts to be written over 2 days.

  • Each “session” will take approximately 60-90 minutes to complete, students can have extra time to complete each session if needed.

  • All Literacy Test activities (practice and actual test) will take place during block A during the regularly scheduled school day.

  • Students eligible for special accommodations will be contacted by the Special Education Department in advance of the test.

Students enrolled in the Remote Learning Program (SRLP) 

  • Eligible students enrolled in the Secondary Remote Learning Program (SRLP) will be invited (by school email address) to participate in the test. In-person attendance is necessary in order to complete the test on site at KCI.  Please reach out to the school administration ( if you have any questions.
